Heroes at the North Coast Repertory
Theatre Wednesday,
November 9, 2011 at 5:30pm
Join us
for a Producers Club pre-reception at the North
Coast Repertory Theatre at 5:30PM and enjoy appetizers from La Jolla Brew
House while chatting with fellow Producers Club members and staff. Following
the reception, enjoy the 7:00PM performance of the theatrical hit Heroes.
Winner of the Laurence Olivier Best New Comedy
award, Tom Stoppard's humor-filled and poignant translation of Gérald
Sibleyras' HEROES, is a heartwarming tale of camaraderie and a moving portrait
of the frustrations inherent in growing older. Three World War I veterans pass
their days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of
long-forgotten military campaigns, grumblings about the staff, and reflections
on their lives. The amazing trio of actors is sure to create a night of theatre
not to be forgotten. (http://www.northcoastrep.org/)

Notes from the General Manager Tom
Karlo
Dear Friends,
We have successfully launched “KPBS Evening
Edition” on TV weeknights at 6:30 p.m. This means we are now producing and
delivering local news on all media platforms of TV, radio and digital outlets.
Two years in planning, fundraising and preparation has led to this multimedia,
in-depth news analysis show. I hope you’ll watch and let me know what you
think.
On October 29 at our KPBS Celebrates Gala:
Masquerade de Venezia, we inducted Gloria Penner into our Hall of Fame with a
Lifetime Achievement Award. During Gloria’s 42 years at
KPBS, she has worn several hats, demonstrating her ability to adapt to the
changing needs of the station and advances in technology. She has worked as
Writer/Editor for KPBS’ On-Air Magazine as well as writer, producer, host,
political correspondent, public affairs director and blogger. Gloria headed up
KPBS TV’s program production unit and hosted KPBS Radio’s weekly "Editors
Roundtable" (now named “The Roundtable”) and "San Diego Week."
She was the host of the first hour of KPBS Radio's "These Days" (now
named "KPBS Midday Edition”) from 1995 to 1999, and the host of KPBS TV's
"Full Focus" from 2003 to 2007. She is probably best known for her
election coverage, having moderated scores of town hall meetings, debates and
forums for KPBS radio and TV as well as the League of Women Voters.
In the Visionary category,
KPBS honored Ms. Danah Fayman and Carol and Dick Hertzberg for their
extraordinary gifts. Ms. Fayman’s support of KPBS has enabled the station to
expand our local news coverage with funding for metro reporting. Carol and Dick
Hertzberg have provided major funding for vital upgrades to KPBS’ television
broadcast center. In addition, the Hertzbergs are champions of public radio,
providing major funding for local, national and international news from NPR as
well as original content from KPBS, including our environmental coverage.
The new Joan and Irwin Jacobs KPBS News Center is
up and running and we are delighted to have moved into our new space! A
generous gift from Joan and Irwin Jacobs enabled us to converge the entire
content news and editorial team. I hope you can join me for a toast on January
21, 2012, at our VIP Open House when we celebrate and tour our new News Center!
Warm Regards,
Tom Karlo General Manager and Producers Club Member
Your Support Makes a Difference
Many thanks for your great support of KPBS through
your membership in the Producers Club. As the end of the year approaches, I
would like to offer you an opportunity to make another investment in San
Diego’s leading source of news and information, children’s and arts and
entertainment programs.
There are two urgent needs that affect everyone who
lives in San Diego:
-Back-up power for our transmitters in case of a
black-out or disaster like the wildfires of 2007 or an earthquake. During the
recent power loss, we had to broadcast over KFMB because we didn’t have a
back-up generator. We have raised $50,000 of the estimated $153,000 project.
-A new radio transmitter on Mt. Soledad that will
enable 400,000 more people who live in La Jolla and North County to receive our
signal. It has taken us 15 years to get FCC permission to move our transmitter
and increase our signal. We have raised $653,500 and must raise $596,500 by
December 2012 to meet the installation deadline.
I hope you will help us with your generous support.
As always, you can make your gift with appreciated securities, check or a
credit card. Another option through December 31, 2011, is an IRA rollover. You
are allowed to donate any amount up to $100,000 from your IRA and it can count
as your required minimum distribution, however you are not taxed on the
withdrawal. Please call Trina Hester at 619.594.2104 for more information.
PC Spotlight Grace Kilpatrick
I am a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley Smith
Barney. I grew up playing club soccer in San Diego. I graduated from Menlo
College, Silicon Valley’s Business School, where I played soccer for all four
years. I like being a part of groups and attending events that help the
community. I play flag football, soccer and enjoy running. I am the third
generation financial advisor in my family, and work for one of the world's
strongest investment organizations.
KPBS is important to me, because I think news and discussion-based
radio programs help people stay informed. I truly believe KPBS promotes
individuals to listen, analyze and create their own opinions. I especially like
that KPBS and its programs inspire people to know what is going on financially
in the world. My favorite program is the new weeknight TV show, “KPBS Evening
Edition”, because I value being connected to my local community. The thing I
enjoy most about being a Producers Club member is that it helps me interact
with others who care about what is happening in San Diego.
