Dear Friends,
After 30 years here at KPBS, Associate
General Manager Stephanie Bergsma has decided to begin the next great chapter
in her life – retirement!
Stephanie first began working at KPBS
in 1982. In the early 90s, her main focus was to raise the funds needed to
construct the entire KPBS building and bring us all together under one roof.
So, we are literally in the house that Stephanie built. But the need for
funding didn’t stop when the building was finished – nor did she.
As most of
us know, Stephanie has accomplished so much for KPBS during her career. Her leadership of the station’s development
department resulted in numerous milestones for KPBS including:
- Stephanie created the Producers Club
in the early ‘80s. Today, the Producers Club has nearly 900 members. She also created
and established KPBS’ Corporate Giving program as a way for corporations and
businesses to support the station.
- In 2003, Stephanie cultivated the
historic $200 million bequest from the late Joan Kroc to National Public Radio.
KPBS also received an unprecedented $5 million bequest.
- In 2006, Stephanie secured a
multi-year funding commitment from Joan and Irwin Jacobs to begin the Fund for
Reporting Excellence. The project started KPBS’ multimedia training for its
reporters and content team and eventually led to complete convergence of all
KPBS’ news platforms.
- Stephanie also worked with the Jacobs
to secure $3 million to create the Joan and Irwin Jacobs KPBS News Center, the showcase
of the station and model for newsrooms nationwide.
Among other accomplishments, Stephanie
created the opportunity for major donors to support reporting beats; she
positioned KPBS to be a leader throughout public broadcasting with Planned
Giving; and her efforts recently funded the new radio transmitter atop Mt.
Soledad and the KPBS TV Digital Operations Center.
Thanks to her, KPBS’ future is strong. She leaves us
with dedicated friends, a loyal base of support, and a path for continued
growth and success. We couldn’t be more thankful or proud of what she has
accomplished. It has been an honor and privilege to work with her and to call
her a friend. From all of us, thank you and congratulations, Stephanie!
Best Regards,

Tom Karlo
General Manager and Producers Club Member
